A Witch in Winter

Anna Winterson doesn't know she's a witch and would probably mock you for believing in magic, but after moving to the small town of Winter with her father, she learns more than she ever wanted to about power. When Anna meets Seth, she is smitten, but when she enchants him to love her, she unwittingly amplifies a deadly conflict between two witch clans and splits her own heart in two. She wants to love Seth, to let him love her – but if it is her magic that's controlling his passion, then she is as monstrous as the witch clan who are trying to use her amazing powers for their own gain.

Although a perfect fit for the paranormal romance genre, A WITCH IN WINTER avoids fangs, excessive body hair and submissive female leads, and tells the heart-wrenching story of a couple meant to be together, but being forced apart. Seth is utterly irresistible and Anna is an empowered, proactive young woman with unimaginable magic inside her. This is fast-paced, sensuous writing with believable incantations inspired by Warburton's research into witchcraft legend and old English

The myth is wrong…

Death is only a man, but one who has control over all living beings. He chooses who will live or die. He commands the fates and gives the order to cut the thread of life. However, Death isn’t alone.

In the beginning of time, he realized that it would be impossible for a single figure to wield power over life and death, while still having time to punish the wicked. Death summoned the tainted souls of the dead and from them created a race of females. They would be the takers of souls, the guardians of the afterlife, and the harbingers of death.

They are Death’s Hellhounds. Wild, impulsive, and terrifying, these sisters have a solitary goal: to hunt down unspeakable evils. When Death calls his Hellhounds to embark on the Wild Hunt, they must forsake their humanity to consume the most depraved souls in existence. Six remain in the veil between life and death, but step through the threshold when Death calls.

Kali has spent her immortal life avoiding attachment. She hides her true self from all but her sisters. When Death gives her an assignment to hunt a rogue angel, she must confront the one man who places her heart in danger. Alone, she must face an enemy too powerful for a solitary Hellhound and find a way to break Death’s leash.

And baying calls ring through the night.
Face your end or turn to flee,
For Death’s Hellhounds have come for thee!

Blood (Mercian Trilogy #1)

I do not remember being bitten. I wish I did, for then I would know the creature who did this to me and I would have a purpose, to track him down and repay him for the poisoned gift he gave me. Back in the Thirteenth Century, Will was destined to be Earl of Mercia, although he never lived to inherit his title. In the centuries that follow, Will has led a lonely life, learning to deal with whatever the present day throws at him, always searching for answers but never finding any. Until this time, when he awakens after a 20-year-slumber, hungry for the blood that sustains his undeath, when it appears that he is finally getting a glimpse at why he exists. He does indeed have a destiny, and an enemy, but revealing that fate will be a matter of trust..

My Review:I thought this book was fantastic and addicting. It's a about Will--a vampire (or his preferred term--undead). This was a refreshing story in that it was a more traditional, gothic tale and the story swept you up into its eerie world. Will wakes up after hibernation and is determined to get revenge on the vampire that bit him. Will meets Eloise and believe she is part of the key to help get revenge. The two of them team up to discover the truth of Will turning into a vampire and why he was made.
by K. J. Wignall, gave me a fresh perspective on a hot teen topic: vampires.  It offers an unexpected love story intertwined with dangerous spirits and evil beings.  The characters are likable, in fact, I found myself rooting for Will to reach out to Eloise- to trust her. The fact that these two experience attraction and feelings in the midst of mystery and chaos keeps the reader captivated by the story. There is just enough violence and action to tempt teen boys, and the right touches of forbidden romance to capture the girls. Blood is a winner, and will surly attract tween/teens who love a story with all the right elements:  the undead, a mysterious past, and impossible love.

many thanks to Netgalley.com and Egmont USA for letting me review this amazing book. this book will be in store on September 27, 2011 so go pick yourself up a copy.

ONCE UPON A TIME--NEW T.V. SHOW COMING SOON :)

ABC has put out some glorious promo posters for it’s upcoming fantasy drama Once Upon a Time, showcasing the main characters we’ll be getting to know. Each poster has a big face front and center for you to see. We have one for Emma Swan (Jennifer Morison), Mary Margaret Blanchard (Ginnifer Goodwin), John Doe (Joshua Dallas), Regina (Lana Parailla), and Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle). Under each character image are the names of their fairy tale counterparts like the Evil Queen, Rumplestiltskin, and Prince Charming. The exception of course is Jennifer Morrison’s poster. All hers says is “Hope”.
Emma Swan is a bail bonds collector who is drawn to the town of Storybrooke by her son whom she gave up for adoption ten years ago. The whole town is a parallel world inhabited by fairy tale characters who don’t remember their past lives or their true identities. Both mother and son hold the future of the real and fairy tale worlds in their hands. I am oddly excited about this series. It most likely has to do with many of the guys in control being veteran’s of the mythologically dense Lost. Those men being creators and writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz as well as producer Damon Lindelof. With guys like that behind the wheel, this could turn out to be surprisingly intriguing and well thought out. Of course, Lost writers have a habit of stalling when they don’t know how long their show will last, so that could happen. Either way, I’m looking forward to watching Once Upon a Time.

Willow has spent most of her life as her mother's sidekick in a popular Las Vegas hypnotism show. So when she and her mom move back to their sleepy southern hometown to start over, she thinks she's in for a life of quiet normalcy. Except that her new life turns out to be anything but, when she kinda sorta hypnotizes Quinton, the hottest guy on the football team, to fall madly, deeply, head over heels in love with her. But what started out as an innocent way to make her best friend, Max, jealous soon gets way out of hand, and Willow begins to wonder if the mind - and more importantly, the heart - is something you can really control

My Quick Review:
This is what great YA fiction is all about! A cute romance, great family relationships, a story with a lot of heart, and a little supernatural twist. Quinton was just too adorable as her hypnotized boyfriend. Never mind that she was using hypnosis to make him what she thought was her perfect boyfriend! It was too cute too see him take the smitten boyfriend to the extreme. I liked the story line with Willow's family a lot. It felt very real. Even though she, her mother, and her grandmother all clashed at times, you could tell there was a lot of love in their family.I also liked that the "mean girl" cheerleader really wasn't that mean after all. Mia was a well-rounded character who actually added a lot to the story.

Born At Midnight by C.C. Hunter

Title: Born at Midnight (Book 1)
Author: C.C. Hunter
Pages: 416
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: March 29, 2011

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

QUICK REVIEW:
Born at Midnight is an evenly-paced, descriptive coming-of-age story that holds nothing back. Its otherworldly environment sustains a well-rounded cast of characters and well-developed bonds that emanate a sense of safety and at the same time holds an air of suspense. The intricate weaving of paranormal aspects and realism, is flawlessly executed by Hunter. I loved the characters, especially Kylie. I'm in awe of C.C.'s writing style and character development. I can't wait to read the next one!
