Oddily (Oddily #1)

She would rather be anyone other than herself…
She wants to fit in at school…
And strange things are happening to her.

For Oddlie, she tries to keep an open mind…
But what she discovers is too unbelievable to think about…
Too magical too consider, and too dangerous to ignore.

Oddlie becomes trapped in a love story like no other.

Excerpt:

The surprise attack came right after lunch. Oddily was waiting for the huge crush of kids to leave the cafeteria when she spotted Kip at the side door, chomping on a toothpick.

“Come here,” he waggled his finger at her.

“Me?” Oddily pointed to herself.

Kip nodded, but when Oddily remained in her seat, he marched over to her table and snatched her backpack from off of her shoulder.

“Give it back!” Oddily chased after him through the rear door and around the corner. She found Kip standing in front of the trash bin, and his hands were empty.

“Where’s my backpack?” Oddily glared at him.

Kip nodded at the dumpster as his smile took on the likeness of a sneer.

“Will you please give it back to me?”

“Yeah, right!” he started to bark, but calmed himself. “Get it yourself.”

Before Oddily could think, Kip grabbed hold of her waist and threw her, head first into discarded trash; soggy, smelly food, and paper waste.

“Ewww!” Oddily shrieked. While listening to Kip’s horsy chuckle, the strangest thing happened. All of a sudden he sounded startled and unnerved.

“Hey man─ back off!” Kip’s agitated voice and heavy footsteps began to fade until her surroundings became eerily quiet.

Oddily grabbed her backpack from the trash and was about to climb out of the dumpster when she overheard someone say, “Hello?”

She froze for a long moment and waited, holding her breath. The magical sound of the voice wasn’t familiar to her, except maybe in her dreams.

“Do you need some help?” She overheard the comforting tone again.

Oddily slowly raised her head above the edge of the garbage bin and looked into the most exquisite face she had ever seen. Vibrant sky blue eyes stared at her while the boy’s mouth remained unresponsive to any smile. Inch by inch,
Oddily lowered herself back down into the trash.

The stranger’s brooding eyes grew wide with surprise. “Does this mean you want to be left alone?” he tried not to express amusement, but he couldn’t fully contain himself. A strangled laugh caught in his throat.

Oddily raised her head again─ enough to peek over the rim and couldn’t help but stare at his now parted lips. She got a glimpse of his perfect, white teeth while he smirked at her. Oddily’s gaze moved up to the hood of his sweatshirt, catching a hint of blonde hair, and then back to his pale blue eyes.

He reached over and removed a piece of lettuce from her hair, and the befuddled redhead gave him a goofy grin in return. He took note of how her smile began far down in her eyes and flowed outward to her face as if a shadow coming into sunshine. She was enchanting.

“Will you please help me out of here?” Oddily stood up and stretched out her arms to him.

Her innocent, trusting gesture caught him off guard, and he staggered a little while helping her from the dumpster. The closeness of her body sent a wave of sensation through him like none he had ever experienced. There was an unfamiliar physical connection with her he couldn’t define─ nor wanted to accept.

Pinky Promise?

A Supernatural Young Adult Romance:

Do you believe in heaven or hell? Angels or Demons? Ghosts, or even second chances at life?

Losing someone is one of the hardest things imaginable, for Jaylynn-first it was her father-and then it was him. The one that had been her first love, the one that had given her the highest hopes towards a wonderful future together, forever.

He, who had promised her he would never leave her just as her father had. Jace, the war hero.

High School senior, Jaylynn doesn't know how to cope with this new loss, and when Jagger-a boy that reminds her entirely too much of Jace enters her world- trouble will brew as secrets and mysteries are unraveled.

This book will be posted as a blog story on my blog by chapter two weeks at a time, in September the full edition will be available for order.

MY REVIEW: I had the opportunity of reading the first chapter of this upcoming book. And now I have finished reading chapter two. From the beginning, you can relate to the character and feel what she felt. but life must go on right? people move on but they never forget. In this second chapter I got to see Jay interact with her friends and dive right back into life even if she didn't want to. then she meets Jagger, someone she can't help feel attracted to but its frustrating when he reminds her of so much she lost. Natalie's way of writing leaves you with a crave for more. I can't wait to see where  she takes this story. I can't wait to see how jay and jagger's relationship develops. This is some good stuff  :)

Ashfall by Mike Mullin

Title: Ashfall
Author: Mike Mullin
Publisher: Tanglewood Press
Pages: 466
Buy: AmazonBook Depository

Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don't know it's there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.

Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new world in which disaster has brought out both the best and worst in people desperate for food, water, and warmth. With a combination of nonstop action, a little romance, and very real science, this is a story that is difficult to stop reading and even more difficult to forget.

My Review: The first thing I noticed—and liked—about Ashfall was that it started off in the world we know. Other dystopian novels I’ve read already had established futuristic societies, while Ashfall really focused on what happened, why the world fell. The apocalypse is so real, so probable, and because we know exactly how it happened, the possibility of such an apocalypse happening is really frightening.
I love Mike's writing style! It was so easy to get into the story that I found it really hard to put down from the beginning. I also loved all the little intricacies and the way that he simulated this volcanic eruption. It reminded me a lot of Dante's peak with a much cooler central character. Also, loved the neighbors, the gay couple supposed to be looking after Alex, what a hoot those two were. The realism was also something that caught me off guard with this one. Basically, everyone reacts the way you'd expect them to in a crisis like this. I know it's like a lot of books to pull us out of our reality, but this one was just so logical, I often found myself thinking that I'd say and do and think the same things if I were in Alex's position. The story centers around Alex, whose parents and sister left him at home while they went to visit family in another state. In their absence, the volcano at Yellowstone erupts, causing massive and widespread effects across the United States. Extreme changes in weather patterns, crop devastation, water supplies sinking, and people panicking everywhere. Through this, Alex feels the need to be reunited with his family, and sets out into the newly chaotic wild world around him, hoping to get to where they were going so they could all be together again. If you’re a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, or stories of survival, then you should pick up this book. Ashfall is the first installment in a planned trilogy and I am so bummed that I have to wait approximately 16 months for the sequel.
